UW-Stout houses one of the oldest (established 1968) hotel, restaurant and tourism management programs in the world. Graduates furnish the managerial talent needed by resorts, hotels, restaurants, private clubs, government tourism agencies and convention bureaus.
Hotel, restaurant and tourism management is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the United States. Each year, leisure time increases for thousands of Americans, and the demands on the hospitality industry are growing. Existing lodging and dining facilities are expanding and new businesses are developing to accommodate the increased demand for hospitality services.
UW-Stout’s Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management majors receive a variety of training. The program includes studies in general education to provide students a flexible background, enabling them to adapt to a wide variety of situations in today’s rapidly changing society. A choice of professional selectives provides students with flexibility to pursue a specialized field of study. The curriculum is designed to prepare competent, creative and responsible managers. Graduates are employed in the hospitality food and beverage industry, and in hotels and tourism facilities.

PSW Opportunity
Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.
Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).
STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
The English proficiency requirement may be waived for applicants from English-speaking countries. This will be determined by the Admissions Office after you have applied.
Ways to show evidence of English proficiency:
- Official TOEFL score: Minimum iBT (or MyBest) score of 70, or minimum paper-based score of 525.
- Official IELTS score, or IELTS One Skill Retake: Minimum score of 6.0
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): Minimum score of 48
- Duolingo English Test (DET):
- Minimum score of 115 overall (minimum sub/sectional scores of 90 or higher)
- UW-Stout's English as a Second Language Institute (ESLI) will require that students who submit Duolingo English Test scores:
- complete additional testing conducted by the ESLI, and
- enroll in additional ESL courses, as applicable.
- Successful completion of UW-Stout's English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
- Earned transfer credit from a regionally accredited school equivalent to UW-Stout's English 101, with a grade of C or higher.
