History and Politics BA(Hons)
The decisions made by governments and other political institutions have a huge effect on people’s lives. Studying politics gives you the chance to see how and why these decisions are made, while studying history lets you explore the impact of past decision-making on people in many different eras and cultures.
History has a 91.6% student satisfaction rating (NSS 2020).
You can choose from a range of historically and geographically diverse option modules to focus on topics that interest you the most.
Opportunities to build up some very useful and transferable skills: analysis and communication, constructing a convincing argument, motivating yourself to work on your own, and developing your ability to work with others, assessing and solving problems together.
Gain valuable work experience in your chosen field. This could involve working for an MP, or helping at a non-governmental organisation (NGO), educational institution or museum.
Get involved with the student History Society and/or the student Politics Society to immerse yourself in your subject and gain practical experience organising events and activities.
On the Politics side of the course, you'll gain a critical understanding of political processes and institutions, focusing specifically on British politics. Fort History, you can study a diverse range of eras and regions, seeing how politics interacts with culture and society over time. There are various extra-curricular activities you can attend, such as guest lectures from MPs or other political figures, and we often hold debates and encourage students to get involved with political blogging.
