B.A. in Sociology

SUNY Polytechnic Institute's B.A. degree emphasizes the application of sociological and anthropological knowledge in the search for innovative solutions to pressing individual and community problems. Effective consideration of these issues requires a thorough grounding in social theory, literacy in the appropriate research, and training in quantitative and qualitative research methods.

SUNY Poly offers two specializations in applied sociology: criminology and social services. Sociology majors often have minors in anthropology, criminal justice, crime analytics, psychology, and technology and culture.

The specialization in criminology explores a range of sociological theory and research about law making, law breaking, law enforcement and the consequences of law enforcement. This knowledge base prepares students to confront the social policy issues associated with crime control and furnishes the background for productive careers in criminal justice occupations.

The specialization in social services fosters an appreciation of the social sources of personal and social problems and the dynamics associated with policies and programs set up to deal with them. We aim to help students become effective consumers of knowledge created by applying sociological and anthropological perspectives to the study of social services, a focus which provides a theoretical and practical understanding of the realities of work in the social service professions.

PSW Opportunity

\Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

First-year/Freshman applicants should generally have a high school average of 85% or higher by U.S. standards to be considered for admission into any undergraduate program offered at SUNY Poly.

First-year/Freshman applicants to SUNY Poly must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving the minimum score noted below from one of the following standardized exams:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet based score of 79
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.0
PTE Academic (PTE): Overall score of 53
Duolingo English Test (DET): Total score of 105
iTEP: Overall score of 4.4
