MASTER’S COURSE IN SUSTAINABLE FASHION DESIGN

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The fashion and luxury industries are sectors in which economic, cultural, and creative processes are concentrated. This means there is an urgent demand in the job market for professionals who possess forward-looking technical, economic, managerial, artistic, cultural, social, and communicative skills, and who can easily step into high-profile roles within the industry. This course analysis the dynamics that form part of the luxury world and especially the fashion sector, aiming at creating awareness of the growing importance of eco and sustainable fashion. The study programme of the Master in Sustainable Fashion Design shapes a fashion designer who is able to enter the product area of luxury businesses with a strong sensitivity towards eco-sustainable and ethical fashion. The curriculum provides a general comprehension of creative and design aspects as well as of production and industrialisation, such as understanding how to plan and design fashion collections, merchandising, costing, and production, and ensuring an ethical procedure at every stage beginning with the materials and planning.  An essential part of the course is conveying knowledge of garment construction and production processes, which is completed through the use of moulage techniques and 3D computer simulation. A highly specialising aspect of the curriculum is the study of textile design and fabric finishings and embellishments, which includes decorating and manipulating materials (including from an upcycling and recycling point of view), and the study of innovative finishing techniques: a major focus point for both traditional and emerging brands. The course also covers the implementation of the processes involved in creating fashion accessory collections through CAD 3D design software, including creating prototypes with a 3D printer. Furthermore, students will also acquire the knowledge and skills needed to be able to create and promote a start-up business.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course aims for students to acquire a range of skills which will allow them to follow all of the phases linked to design processes (briefing, defining trends and targets, research, choosing materials, the merchandising plan, product design, prototypes, costs, samples, and production procedures), leading up to the creation of a professional portfolio. The final objective is to provide the knowledge needed for students to be able to create fashion and luxury products which respect the ever-more fundamental principles of green fashion.
